273-073 Piezo update

Over past several days the Radio Shack piezo element, part number 273-073, has lighted the efficient red LED 3 times now. This is very interesting, as it requires significant time, at least a day, for the piezo element to recover from each discharge.

The piezo element is inside a thick Hammond metal shield, connected to a mechanical tilt switch, which is connected to an efficient red LED (see previous blog posts for part #). All of these passive components are inside the metal shield, except the red LED points out of a hole in the metal shield. When the entire chassis is tilted, the ball in the tilt switch closes the circuit, and the piezo element discharges through the red LED.

Prior to first discharge, the LED lighted for ~ one second. Prior to that the entire setup was undisturbed for ~ a week. The second discharge was ~ a day after the first discharge, and the LED lighted for a fraction of a second. The third discharge was ~ a day afterward, and again lighted the LED for a fraction of a second.

Once the piezo element has discharged, it does not matter how many times the setup is tilted back and forth, as the LED does not light up again until the piezo has had sufficient time to recover, which so far has been ~ a day.
